Chautauqua Children's Safety Education Village

What is the Children's Safety Village?
In Chautauqua County, numerous children are injured each year because they lack the understanding necessary to avoid those situations where danger is present. The Safety Village will be a child sized town complete with a business district, streets with authentic traffic signals, a railroad crossing, child size electric cars and bicycles. The village will be built on a 5-acre plot of land, leased from and located next to the Ashville BOCES. It will feature approximately 20 small buildings and a larger building with two 35-student classrooms. Children in kindergarten through fourth grade will be taught the fundamentals of traffic, rail, bicycle, pedestrian, and fire safety. This village will provide a unique way of first educating the students in the classroom, followed by actual hands on training on the streets and in the Fire Safety Center.

The Chautauqua Children's Safety Education Village, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization formed by a small community group of volunteers. It will be built and maintained by donations of cash, as well as services and materials from local businesses, at an estimated cost of $856,000. Our credit union has joined in with many of the area credit unions in an attempt to raise enough money (approximately $16,000) to sponsor one of the twenty buildings.
